Championing public education

The value of our flagship research
Â鶹AV’s Annual Ontario School Survey (AOSS) is unique in Canada. It is an audit of the public education system — tracking the impact of funding and policy changes on schools across the province, and identifying trends over time.
The recommendations coming out of the survey findings have influenced education policy and funding in Ontario. In March 2018, shortly after the release of our report on guidance counsellors, the government announced that school boards will receive funding for guidance counsellors in grades 7 and 8 at the same rate as high school, which will result in 450 more guidance counsellors for schools with grades 7 and 8.

Competencies beyond the 3R's
In May, 2018, the Ministry of Â鶹AV’s recommended integrating creativity, citizenship, health and social-emotional competencies into all curriculum. As per Â鶹AV’s advice, the recommendations also stated that “A modernized curriculum will integrate equity, inclusivity and well-being throughout the development and implementation processes, and recognize and address systemic bias and barriers, ensuring that physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual health are fundamental aspects and not add-ons.â€
